Dominguez sent to Minor League camp

JUPITER, Fla. — The Marlins third base job is wide open.

On Thursday morning, the team announced that prospect Matt Dominguez has been reassigned to Minor League camp.

Dominguez, the 21-year-old prospect, has struggled at the plate, hitting .190 (8-for-42) with a .292 on base percentage.

The Marlins made five other moves on Thursday, reassigning to Minor League camp — Josh Kroeger, Frank Mata, Joe Thurston and Ruben Gotay. After the game, they sent lefty reliever Victor Garate down.

Manager Edwin Rodriguez said he will give Donnie Murphy and Emilio Bonifacio most of the work at third base, and there could be a bit of a platoon situation.

Bonifacio also may be in center field because Chris Coghlan’s right shoulder is a concern.

Rodriguez repeated that he is not going to move second baseman Omar Infante to third base.

The roster is down to 31.

The team also may be trying to explore trade options, but the asking price is higher than they may be willing to part with.

In another move, outfielder John Raynor, who was sent down a few days ago, asked for and received his release from the organization.

Helms resting sore shoulder

Veteran Wes Helms, who made the trip to Port St. Lucie on Friday, was scratched due to a sore right shoulder.

Helms initially was scheduled to play third base and hit fifth. He was replaced by Ruben Gotay.

Also before the game, manager Edwin Rodriguez noted that the team would know more on Sunday if Anibal Sanchez will make his next start.

Sanchez suffered a bruise to the side of his right shin after he was hit with a comeback liner on Thursday afternoon.

Non-roster invitees announced

In the past the Marlins have had success with non-roster invitees emerging as key contributors. The list includes Jorge Cantu, Clay Hensley and Kiko Calero.

Perhaps they will strike big with some players in 2011.

On Tuesday, the Marlins annouced the signings of seven six-year free agents, who will be at Spring Training as non-roster invitees.

Signed are left-handers Darin Downs and Victor Garate. Right-hander Frank Mata also will be in camp.

Ruben Gotay, a switch-hitting infielder, is among the group who has big league experience. Tim Torres (infielder), outfielder-first baseman Josh Kroeger and outfielder Chris Lubanski also have signed.

Lubanski will be a candidate for a left-handed bat off the bench.
