Marlins revamp Thursday lineup

The Marlins have shaken up the lineup in the series finale with the Braves on Thursday. Nick Johnson was back in the starting lineup for the first time since Aug. 16. Cameron Maybin is starting and playing center field. It’s Maybin’s first start for Florida since May 7, he spent most of the season at Triple-A New Orleans. And Andy Gonzalez, who had his contract selected on Thursday, started at shortstop.

Hanley Ramirez continues to rest his strained left hamstring.

Right fielder Jeremy Hermida aggravated a rib on Wednesday and he isn’t in Thursday’s lineup.

Nick Johnson is back

After two rehab assignment games, Nick Johnson was cleared to return to the Marlins.

On Thursday afternoon, the team made it official. Johnson was returned from his rehab assignment and reinstated from the disabled list.

The veteran first baseman will be in uniform for Florida on Thursday night in the series finale with the Braves.

Johnson has not played since Aug. 16 due to a right hamstring strain.

Also on Thursday, the Marlins selected the contract of infielder Andy Gonzalez from Triple-A New Orleans.

Adding Gonzalez was necessary because All-Star shortstop Hanley Ramirez is dealing with a strained left hamstring. With Ramirez resting, Emilio Bonifacio had been the only shortstop option on the roster.

Nick Johnson ready?

Nick Johnson played six innings and had two at-bats in a rehab assignment on Wednesday night for Class A Jupiter.

It was the veteran first baseman’s second rehab game, and this is his first game action since Aug. 16, when he sprained his right hamstring.

With a couple of Marlins regulars dealing with minor ailments, is the team ready to reinstate Johnson on Thursday for their series finale with the Braves?

After the Marlins beat the Braves, 8-7, on Wednesday night, Fox Sports Florida’s Craig Minervini reported that Johnson said he was headed to Miami on Thursday and that he’s “good to go.”

After the game, Minervini exchanged text messages with Johnson.

The Marlins had been planning on Johnson joining the team on the road this weekend at Washington. That may change now out of need.

The team is dealing with a couple of ailments. Hanley Ramirez is resting a strained left hamstring, and outfielder Jeremy Hermida left Wednesday’s game with a right intercostal (rib) strain. Both are listed as day-to-day.

In two rehab games for Jupiter, Johnson is 1-for-3 with a double.

Johnson going on rehab assignment

Marlins first baseman Nick Johnson, on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain, will be going on a rehab assignment for Class-A Jupiter on Tuesday.

The plan is for Johnson to play at least two games with the Hammerheads, and the first baseman may be able to join the Marlins as early as Friday at Washington.

Johnson tweaked his hamstring during the first game of a double-header with the Rockies on Aug. 16.
