Prospects excel vs. Italy

With little fanfare, the Marlins played a B Game scrimmage against Team Italy on Field 2 of the Roger Dean Stadium complex on Sunday morning.
The hitting coach for the Italian Team is Mike Piazza, the former All-Star catcher and likely future Hall of Famer.

The scrimmage was a good chance for a number of Marlins prospects to get some game action. In the victory for Florida, right-hander Omar Poveda tossed two innings, giving up one run. It was his first game action since he underwent Tommy John surgery.

Poveda was obtained from the Rangers as part of the Jorge Cantu trade last July.

The right-hander showed a good changeup, and his fastball had some movement. It was an encouraging first trip back to the mound. Poveda is expected to open the season in Double-A, and then move up to Triple-A, .

A starting pitcher, he could be a candidate later in the season if the Marlins have a need for a long reliever or emergency starter.

Also in the scrimmage, Kyle Skipworth and Josh Kroeger each homered.

B Game highlights

Some things that stood out in the B Game on Saturday:

* Ryan Tucker worked two fast, scoreless innings, not allowing a baserunner. The right-hander struck out one. After throwing in the game against the Orioles on field two, Tucker got a little extra work by throwing some more pitches in the bullpen. The right-hander was pleased with his slider.

* Matt Dominguez had a two-run RBI single, which were the only runs of the game until the eighth and final inning.

* Prospect Kyle Skipworth in the last inning, had a two-run double with the bases loaded.

* John Lindsey made some nice plays at first base.

Camping out

Interesting items and tidbits that went on Sunday at Marlins camp:

* Manager Fredi Gonzalez said team is leaning towards carrying 12 pitchers.

* Because of off days in the regular season on April 9 and April 13, a fifth starter isn’t needed until April 20 at Pittsburgh. Gonzalez said he may go with four starters every fifth day until then. The other option is to start off with a five-man rotation, and just give everyone an extra day.

* Most of the pitchers threw off the mound for their second straight day, including projected starters Josh Johnson, Chris Volstad, Anibal Sanchez, Ricky Nolasco and Andrew Miller.

* Harvey Garcia (recovering from right shoulder surgery) remains the only pitcher restricted.

* Kyle Skipworth, the No. 1 pick from last year, looked impressive taking batting practice. The left-handed hitter shows why he is so highly touted.

* Workouts on Monday begin at 10 a.m. ET on the backfields of Roger Dean Stadium.

* Many feel the Opening Day starter will be Nolasco, based on his 2008 performance.
