Marlins open crucial series
After taking two of three from the Mets in New York, the Marlins are two games above .500 as they open a three game series at Atlanta.
The Marlins are 8 1/2 in back of the Braves in the NL East, and they’re six games out in the Wild Card chase.
“The way I see it, and pretty much the way the whole team sees it, every game is important to us, regardless of it we play the Braves or any other team,” manager Edwin Rodriguez said. “We had a very good series in New York. I think we have the momentum going our way. This is the time, we’re playing the teams that are ahead of us.
“If we have a very good series here, we’re going to start putting some pressure on the teams above us.”

More about Mike Stanton
Get used to hearing more about Mike Stanton.
At the rate the Marlins rookie right fielder is going, expect to see more news about him reaching levels rarely seen before.
The 6-foot-5 1/2, 240-pounder on Friday had his first multi-home run game when he went deep twice at Cincinnati.
According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Stanton is the first Major League player under the age of 21 to homer twice in a game since Miguel Cabrera on April 13, 2004 at Montreal.
Elias also provided this bit of information. At 20 years, 278 days (as of Friday), Stanton is the youngest player to have a two homer game since Jose Reyes (20 years, 78 days) on Aug. 28, 2003 at Atlanta.
Remarkably, Stanton is climbing fast among the MLB rookie home run leaders. It’s only surprising because his competition has played in far more games. But now with 14, he has passed Gaby Sanchez and Jason Heyward, who both have 12.
Tyler Colvin of the Cubs paces all rookies with 18. It may be a matter of time before Stanton assums the top spot.
Rookie home run leaders:
Tyler Colvin: 18 (105 G)
Ike Davis: 15 (100 G)
Brennan Boesch: 14 (93 G)
Mike Stanton: 14 (54 G)
Jason Heyward: 12 (96 G)
Gaby Sanchez: 12 (107 G)

Stanton climbing rookie leaderboard
The rest of the class had a head start. Now, Mike Stanton is catching up.
On Wednesday night, Stanton connected on his 10th homer of the season, making him the seventh rookie this year to reach the double-digit mark. The 20-year-old belted No. 10 in his 47th big league game. By comparison, Justin Smoak of the Mariners has 10 homers and he’s played in 86 games.
Tyler Colvin of the Cubs paces all rookies with 17, and he has played 99 games.
At 20, Stanton already is one of the strongest players in the game. Counting his Minor League numbers this season, the rookie has 31 homers in pro ball this season.
At Double-A Jacksonville, he belted 21 homers in 53 games before being promoted to the big leagues on June 23. Stanton has been out of Double-A eight weeks, and he still leads the Southern League in homers. Carlos Peguero of West Tennessee is second with 19 in 101 games.
There is another big league rookie who also is showing a great deal of power. Pedro Alvarez of the Pirates has eight homers in 42 games.
As impressive as Stanton’s power has been, he won’t likely set the Marlins rookie home run record. In 2006, Dan Uggla belted 27.
Here’s the top home run leaders among rookies:
1. Tyler Colvin, Cubs, 17
2. Ike Davis, Mets, 15
3. Brennan Boesch, Tigers, 12
4. Gaby Sanchez, Marlins, 12
5. Jason Heyward, Braves, 11
6. Justin Smoak, Mariners, 10
7. Mike Stanton, Marlins, 10

Hanley back, Stanton stays back
Hanley Ramirez is back in the lineup after resting a tight right groin. But prospect Mike Stanton was held back in Jupiter with a sore left elbow.
Stanton was initially scheduled to travel to Lake Buena Vista on Tuesday to face the Braves. Had he gone, two of the top three prospects in the game would have been together. Atlanta’s Jason Heyward is regarded as the No. 1 prospect, with Stanton ranked No. 3.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez said Stanton is a little sore after his four at-bat performance on Monday against the Twins. The slugger had a two-run homer, and struck out three times.
Ramirez, meanwhile, was in the starting lineup against the Braves.
In other injury news, Cameron Maybin is running the bases on Tuesday in Jupiter. If he doesn’t feel any discomfort, he could be back in the lineup on Wednesday. Maybin has been out since March 7 with a strained left groin.
Jorge Cantu, out since Sunday with flu-like symptoms, stayed in Jupiter on Tuesday. He is feeling better and may be in the lineup on Wednesday.
