Sanabia gets start vs. Twins

The Marlins are sending Alex Sanabia to the mound on Monday to face the Twins in Fort Myers.

The right-hander is getting the nod now that Javier Vazquez has been scratched due to mild right elbow soreness.

Over the past week, Sanabia has dealt with some minor discomfort in his right elbow. He also has been working on some things with his delivery.

Sanabia is expected to throw only one inning. Brad Hand, Dan Jennings and Clay Hensley are also scheduled to pitch.

Vazquez, Coghlan dealing with ailments

JUPITER, Fla. — Javier Vazquez has been scratched from pitching Monday due to mild elbow soreness, and Chris Coghlan is dealing with a sore right shoulder.

Mild injuries are piling up for the Marlins.

Vazquez was scheduled to face the Twins on Monday in Fort Myers. Alex Sanabia will make the start, and he is expected to throw one inning. To add pitching depth for the trip, Brad Hand and Dan Jennings are making the trip and will pitch. Both left-handers were recently sent down to Minor League camp.

Clay Hensley also is expected to pitch.

“He has mild elbow soreness, but he should be ok for his next start,” Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez said. “He said he wanted to make sure that he would be ready for the regular season. He will have three more starts before the season starts, so he should be fine.”

Vazquez would be lined up to pitch on Saturday against the Cardinals.

“If something is going to happen, this is a good time to deal with that,” Rodriguez said. “At this point, we just want to make sure everybody is going to be alright for Opening Day. So that’s why we’re not taking any chances.”

As for Coghlan, the center fielder is a sore right shoulder.

It’s been bothering him for a little while, and it was made public on Sunday.

“His shoulder is not 100 percent,” Rodriguez said. “That’s normal because he didn’t have the chance to get in very good shape, throwing-wise when he was rehabbing.”

Marlins facing Italy in B Game

On Sunday afternoon, the Marlins will be taking on the Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium.

Chris Volstad will make the start for Florida, while St. Louis goes with Kevin Thomas in the 1:05 p.m. ET start.

Before the scheduled Grapefruit League game on the main field at the complex, on Field 2, the Marlins will be playing Italy in a B Game that starts at 10:30 a.m.

The exhibition gives the Marlins a chance to throw a few of their pitching prospects. Omar Poveda is scheduled to start. Brad Hand, Chad James, Rob Rasmussen, Chris Hatcher and Dan Jennings are lined up to pitch.

No defense against the walks

For all the talk about improving defensively, the Marlins encountered something they couldn’t defend on Sunday.

The bullpen combined to walk 11 in a 9-8 loss against the University of Miami at Roger Dean Stadium.

“We’re going to be better defending on the field,” manager Edwin Rodriguez said. “But we can’t defend the walks.”

Prospects Chad James, Brad Hand, Jhan Marinez and Dan Jennings accounted for all 11 walks.

Other items of note on Sunday.

* Rodriguez said the dugout went silent for about five seconds when Mike Stanton pulled up while running to first base in the second inning. Stanton stumbled to the ground at first base, and he exited with a strained right quad.

“It’s still early, but we want to make sure he’s 100 percent when he is on the field,” Rodriguez said.

* With Stanton out, Dewayne Wise will receive more work in right field. Scott Cousins and Bryan Petersen also will be in the mix. Rodriguez singled Wise out, saying he likes what he is seeing from the non-roster invitee.

* Gaby Sanchez is expected to bat cleanup with Stanton out.

* Hanley Ramirez should be in the lineup on Monday in the Grapefruit League opener against the Cardinals. But center fielder Chris Coghlan will not be playing, even though he felt fine after playing a couple of innings on Sunday.

* Ricky Nolasco likely will throw off the mound for the first time on Wednesday. Nolasco has been nursing a sore right thumb.

* Catcher John Baker’s became a father on Feb. 24 when his wife, Meghan, gave birth to a baby girl.
