Saltly steals show and Jose’s clothes
JUPITER, Fla. — No, that wasn’t the artist who is still known as Prince on Field 2 at Roger Dean Stadium on Friday morning. It was Marlins catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, keeping things light, but taking the field to stretch while wearing Jose Fernandez’s purple pants and gold shoes.
Saltalamacchia even swiped one of Fernandez’s No. 16 jerseys, and romped around on the field to laughter from his teammates.
“I don’t know if those pants are going to fit Jose again, ever,” manager Mike Redmond said. “He might have to get a new pair of purple pants.”When you wear bright pants and gold shoes to camp like Fernandez did on Friday, you never know how your teammates are going to react. Fernandez found out quickly, and he completely bought into the joke.
“I love it,” Fernandez said.
From the field, a player was heard asking: “Is that Prince?”
So much so that Fernandez ran into the clubhouse to get his phone to talk some pictures. Saltalmacchia, meanwhile, did his morning stretch while wearing those tight, bright purple jeans.
“I think he looks good,” Redmond said. “Salty can pull it off.”
The gold shoes also got their share of laughs.
“It’s pretty funny,” Redmond said. “That was a good laugh in there. That’s what happens in baseball. You sit around too long, you think of stuff crazy to do. But it’s funny.”
