Bonifacio to DL, Green gets called up
WASHINGTON — With Emilio Bonifacio now on the disabled list, the Marlins on Saturday selected the contract of Nick Green.
The 33-year-old utility infielder was with the club in Spring Training, and he was enjoying a strong season at Triple-A New Orleans, batting .344 with 16 doubles, 12 home runs and 47 RBIs in 63 games.
New Orleans immediately lifted Green from its game at Salt Lake City on Friday night once it was learned Bonifacio sprained his left thumb.
Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen is not counting on Bonifacio returning this season.
Green has played in parts of six big leagues seasons. His last stint was with Toronto in 2010.
Green provides depth at third base, shortstop and second base.
Miami’s infield is short because Donnie Murphy could miss at least a few games with a left hamstring strain.
