Numbers tell the story of June

MIAMI — What’s been going wrong in June?

Let’s look at some basic numbers.

The Marlins are 4-14 in the month, and enter Friday three games under .500 and eight games off the pace of the Nationals in the NL East.

Compared to the rest of the 16-team National League in June, the Marlins rank last in runs scored with 50. Atlanta is 15th with 63 runs and the Reds have 96 runs in the month, topping the NL.

In team batting average, Miami’s .216 average also is at the bottom. Cincinnati is batting at a league best .281.

Flipping over to the pitching, the Marlins starters are 3-13 in the month with a 5.91 ERA, which is the worst in the NL for the month.

Marlins relievers have a 6.45 ERA in June, second to last in the month. Houston’s bullpen has an 8.04 ERA in the month.

As the numbers show, the team needs improvement in several key areas.
