Cousins expected to get called up

ST. PETERSBURG — With Emilio Bonifacio expected to be out until about the All-Star Break, the Marlins have been looking for a center field option to step up.

Chris Coghlan was given an opportunity, but with a .140 average, the Marlins on Wednesday night optioned him to Triple-A New Orleans. Coghlan was in an 0-for-16 slump at the time he was sent down.

No official announcement has been made regarding who will be called up. But it is expected to be Scott Cousins, who will get his first big league opportunity this season.

The 27-year-old is a left-handed hitter who can play all three outfield positions. He has one of the strongest arms for an outfielder in the organization.

At New Orleans, Cousins batted .292 with seven homers and 32 RBIs in 50 games.

Cousins has appeared in 75 big league games, including 48 in 2011. His collision at home plate with Buster Posey of the Giants last May 25 became a national story. On June 14, 2011, Cousins went on the disabled list with a lower back strain.

Cousins was in the mix for a backup outfield spot in Spring Training, but he was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans on March 23.

In 89 career MLB at-bats, Cousins has a .202 aerage with one home run and six RBIs.

Justin Ruggiano is expected to get plenty of playing time in center field.

When you are batting .140, I’m not sure 0 for 16 is a “slump,” it’s the norm…
