Marlins option Coghlan after latest loss

MIAMI — The Marlins optioned outfielder Chris Coghlan to Triple-A New Orleans after suffering a 10-2 loss to the Red Sox on Wednesday night.

Coghlan, who didn’t start on Wednesday, is hitting .140 in 93 at-bats. He had been in an 0-for-16 slump since collecting two hits at Philadelphia on June 3.

The Marlins did not announce who will be joining the team when they open their three-game set at Tampa Bay on Friday.

A possibility is Scott Cousins, who has had a solid season at New Orleans. Cousins is batting .292 in 50 games. A left-handed hitter, Cousins has seven home runs and 32 RBIs.

He had two at-bats for New Orleans on Wednesday. In his last 10 games, Cousins is batting .371.

Bryan Petersen does not appear to be a choice, because he was optioned to Triple-A on June 8. Barring a player going on the disabled list, teams have to wait 10 days to recall a player after he is sent down.
