Marlins cleaned up in May, ready for June

PHILADELPHIA — No matter how you look at the numbers, the Marlins unquestionably had a historical May.

The team went 21-8, setting a franchise mark for the most wins in any month. Previously, 19 wins (August 1997) was the team high.

Now all 30 MLB teams have had at least one month where they won as many as 20 games.

Giancarlo Stanton clearly played a big part of the rise. Stanton belted 12 home runs in May and added 30 RBIs. His home run total matches Dan Uggla (May 2008) for the most by a Marlin in any month. And his 30 RBIs ties Miguel Cabrera (2006) for a high in May.

Manager Ozzie Guillen moved Stanton into the cleanup spot on May 25, and in the six games since, the team is 5-1.

Stanton closed out May by going 9-for-19 (.474) with three doubles, three home runs and seven RBIs after the switch.

Even before being placed in the No. 4 spot, Stanton was producing in the month. He batted .315 with seven doubles, nine home runs and 23 RBIs in his 23 games batting lower in the order.

As a team, Miami also was having success, going 16-7 in those games.

Perhaps it is a coincidence, but since Stanton was slotted cleanup, Hanley Ramirez also has been on a roll.

With Stanton hitting behind him, Ramirez is 10-for-21 (.476) with two doubles, a home run and four RBIs in the last six games.

Actually, Ramirez’s overall homestand was impressive. In the 10 games, he was 17-for-36 (.472) with three doubles, a triple, one home run and six RBIs. He scored nine runs and swiped four bases.

The Marlins get June going on Friday at Philadelphia.
