JJ to be further evaluated

MIAMI — As a precaution, Marlins ace Josh Johnson will have his right shoulder examined by a physician on Wednesday.

The two-time All-Star, who is on the 60-day disabled list with right shoulder inflammation, resumed throwing off the mound on June 17. He has continued tossing in side bullpen sessions every couple of days since.

To make sure there aren’t any complications with his shoulder, the 27-year-old right-hander will get another medical opinion.

Johnson is eligible to be reinstated off the 60-day disabled list on July 16, during the Marlins series with the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The team has been hopeful the 6-foot-7 right-hander will be ready by that series.

Johnson has dealt with some shoulder tightness since Spring Training, but it didn’t give him significant discomfort until his start on May 16 against the Mets at Citi Field. In that game, Johnson’s velocity, which typically is in the 95-96 mph range, dipped to 90-91.

Johnson was placed on the 15-day disabled list on May 21, retroactive to May 17. On June 15, the 27-year-old was transferred to the 60-day disabled list. He recently had an ultrasound taken on his right knee.

Before going on the disabled list, Johnson made nine starts and the right-hander is 3-1 with a 1.64 ERA.

A Tale of Two Teams: Early in the season we saw “the best of times” and then, a team that could barely score a run. I still see a roster with plenty of potential, and yet, the L’s keep coming. Do you anticipate major personnel changes prior to Opening Day 2012?
