JJ and Doc bring winning edge

MIAMI — If you ask Josh Johnson who has set the standard for all starting pitchers in the big leagues, the Marlins’ ace doesn’t hesitate mentioning Roy Halladay.

Why?

“You can go up and down the list,” JJ said. “His attitude, the way he goes about his business. I’ve watched his in-between starts. I’ve watched his bullpens. He’s really, really impressive. He’s one of the guys — what he does on and off the field — it’s all business. That’s what I look to do.”

Johnson and Halladay hook up again on Tuesday when the Marlins face the Phillies at Sun Life Stadium.

As impressive as Halladay has been, JJ certainly isn’t far behind when it comes to being a dominating force on the mound.

The difference is Halladay has performed at such a high level for a longer period of time.

But since JJ’s rookie season in 2006, he ranks up there with the best in the game in winning percentage.

In fact, since 2006, Halladay is fourth in the big leagues with a .683 winning percentage, while Johnson is fifth with a .676 percentage.

The difference between the two is number of starts. Johnson missed substantial time in 2007 and half of 2008 due to Tommy John ligament repairment surgery.

Halladay is 95-44 with a 2.93 ERA since 2006, while JJ is 48-23 with a 2.99 ERA. Opponents are hitting .239 off Johnson, compared to .250 against Halladay.

What separates Halladay from the rest of the field is his ability to finish what he starts. Halladay has 40 complete games in 168 starts (since ’06), while JJ has made 110 starts with four complete games.
