Coghlan pacing himself

The reason Chris Coghlan was scratched from the lineup on Wednesday afternoon was not injury related. It had more to do with scheduling.

After reviewing where he is at, the Marlins decided to sit Coghlan on Wednesday so he can play on Thursday and Friday. The idea is to get him rested enough to play in back-to-back games.

“It was just so we can play two, there isn’t anything serious,” Coghlan said. “I’ll be playing tomorrow during the day game, and traveling to Port St. Lucie on Friday.”

The Marlins have two games on Thursday, in the afternoon against the Mets and at 7:05 p.m. against the Tigers. Both are at Roger Dean Stadium.

On Friday, the Marlins travel to Port St. Lucie to take on the Mets.

“We’re three weeks away from the season,” Coghlan said. “It’s for scheduling, and it’s also to be patient. It wasn’t like today, I was in the lineup and then warming up something happened to my knee. It wasn’t like that at all.

“It was more of a thing of communicating and pacing.”

Coghlan was scheduled to be the designated hitter and lead off on Wednesday. He anticipates being a DH at least one of the next two games.

Coghlan is recovering from surgery to repair a tear in his left meniscus. He played back-to-back games on Sunday and Monday.
