Stanton swinging off the tee

Mike Stanton is doing some limited baseball activities.

The past two days the Marlins’ right fielder has taken swings off the tee in the batting cages.

“Everything is fine,” manager Edwin Rodriguez said.

Stanton strained his right quad in the exhibition opener against the University of Miami last Sunday. He expects to miss at least two weeks of games, but that time table is tentative.

Stanton began taking some swings on Thursday, and he was back in the cages on Friday morning. The next step is to take batting practice on the field, which could be on Sunday.

For now, he isn’t doing any running drills.

Other items of note from Rodriguez’s morning session with the media:

* John Baker is in the lineup on Friday as the designated hitter. It’s his first game action of the spring. Baker is recovering from Tommy John surgery.

* Greg Dobbs (knee) also took swings in the cages on Friday, and he could be game ready by Sunday.

* Chris Coghlan was in the starting lineup playing center field on Friday. But Coghlan is not making any long bus rides until the middle of Spring Training. He won’t be traveling to Fort Myers on Saturday.

* Ricky Nolasco is throwing another bullpen session on Friday.

* On Sunday, the Marlins will play Italy in a scrimmage on Field 2 at Roger Dean Stadium. Mike Piazza is a coach on the Italian staff. The start time is 10:30 a.m., before the team plays the Cardinals on the main field.
