Nolasco throws off mound

After talking his situation over with the Marlins medical staff, Ricky Nolasco was cleared to throw his first bullpen session of Spring Training on Tuesday morning.

The right-hander threw a pain-free 55-pitch bullpen session. He threw all of his pitches, and is next scheduled to throw off the mound on Friday.

“It’s not getting any worse. I’ve been doing some pretty aggressive stuff with it,” Nolasco said. “So we just sat down and went over my schedule. I said, ‘It’s not going to matter if I go [Wednesday], Thursday, Friday or Saturday.’ So I just wanted to do it today and see how it felt.”

If all goes well, the tentative plan is to have Nolasco pitch in a game on March 13. The right-hander says barring any setbacks, he should be fine for the opening of the regular season.

Josh Johnson will pitch on Opening Night, on April 1, against the Mets. Nolasco projects to face New York on April 2.

Nolasco has been bothered by a jammed right thumb, which prevented him from tossing off the mound until Tuesday.

Earlier in the morning, Marlins manager Edwin Rodriguez was more cautious about Nolasco.

“We’ll see how he feels today,” Rodriguez said. “Everything is tentative with him.”

Alex Sanabia and Shawn Hill are candidates to fill Nolasco’s rotation spot in the Spring Training until he is cleared to pitch in Grapefruit League games.

Sanabia is scheduled to start on Thursday when the Marlins face the Astros in Kissimmee.

In other news Tuesday, the Marlins have come to contract terms with a number of their players who are under club control and not yet in their arbitration years.

Florida agreed to terms with RHP Arquimedes Caminero, RHP Jose Ceda, RHP Steve Cishek, RHP Chris Hatcher, RHP Jhan Marinez, RHP Adalberto Mendez, RHP Omar Poveda, RHP Evan Reed, RHP Sandy Rosario, RHP Alex Sanabia, RHP Brian Sanches, RHP Chris Volstad, LHP Mike Dunn, LHP Dustin Richardson, LHP Sean West, C John Baker, C Brad Davis, C Brett Hayes, INF Emilio Bonifacio, INF Ozzie Martinez, OF Chris Coghlan, OF Scott Cousins and OF Bryan Petersen.
