Ross, Maybin play catch

When the Marlins took the field for morning workouts at Roger Dean Stadium, among the group stretching were Cameron Maybin and Cody Ross.

That’s an encouraging sign considering both are dealing with left groin strains.

Maybin was injured on Sunday while rounding third base and scoring a run against the Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium.

Ross, meanwhile, tweaked his groin during warmups on Monday before the Marlins faced the Mets. The right fielder had been nursing a sore right thumb, which is feeling considerably better.

Ross took batting practice on the field and then hit in the cage. Maybin, meanwhile, threw but didn’t bat. He says he will do some batting on Wednesday.

Ross may test his legs by doing some light jogging on Wednesday.

With Ross and Maybin out, the Marlins are giving plenty of outfield opportunity to prospects in camp. Jai Miller started in center field on Tuesday against the Red Sox, and Bryan Petersen was in right field.

Catcher John Baker is expected to begin throwing on Wednesday. He’s been out with a right forearm muscle strain. On Monday, Baker took some swings off a tee on Monday.

Derrick Turnbow, out with a sore right shoulder, threw 33 pitches off the mound on Tuesday.

Hampered by some tendinitis, the veteran right-hander is hoping to play in a game either on Friday or Saturday. He says he needs about seven or eight innings of work in Spring Training to be ready for the season.

Signed to a Minor League contract, Turnbow has an out clause that kicks in on April 1. If he feels he isn’t part of the team’s plans by that date, he could opt out and become a free agent.
