Cantu takes his cuts

Full squad workouts begin on Wednesday, but that didn’t stop Jorge Cantu from showing up early to Marlins camp. On Sunday, Cantu took some batting practice on a back field at Roger Dean Stadium.

The Marlins cleanup hitter took some swings, along with Chris Coghlan, Brett Carroll and Gaby Sanchez, after the Marlins catchers’ went through batting practice.

In 2009, Cantu drove in 100 runs in a season where he wasn’t 100 percent. Early on, he was struck in the left hand by a Daniel Cabrera fastball. Then, he dealt with dizziness, which was related to medication he was taking.

And in the second to last game of the season, he severely sprained his right ankle while running the bases in Philadelphia.

He ended the season in a walking boot, and he said it took months for the ankle to get healthy. Now, he claims his ankle is 100 percent.

Something that continues to nag him a bit is the left hand, which isn’t fully recovered. How Cantu’s body mends will be something the Marlins will monitor during Spring Training.

Cantu has shown he can play through pain and be productive. He finished strong in 2009, despite all the ailments. The Marlins in January signed him for $6 million, and they expect him to be their third Opening Day third baseman.
