Baker bruises left hand
Ronny Paulino was slated to start the second game of the double-header anyway.
Paulino entered in Game 1 in the seventh inning, replacing John Baker, who was lifted with a left-hand contusion.
Baker was shaken up in the fourth inning.
On a wild pitch after striking out in the fourth, Baker was accidentally swatted in the face by Ryan Howard’s glove. His left hand went up to protect his face, and he suffered the bruise.
An X-ray came back negative, and the catcher is listed as day-to-day.
Baker reached when Joe Blanton’s strike three was not handled by Phillies catcher Paul Bako.
About the time Baker was reaching first base, Howard extended to catch Bako’s throw, and his glove smacked Baker in the face. The ball, Baker said, struck him on the left hand.
Baker was tended to by assistant trainer Mike Kozak and manager Fredi Gonzalez, but he remained in the game for a couple of more innings.
Baker said he feels he can play on Wednesday, however, with the Phillies going with lefty Cole Hamels, Paulino is slated to start.
