VandenHurk for Friday
With Chris Volstad struggling, the Marlins have decided to start right-hander Rick VandenHurk on Friday at Cincinnati.
Volstad would have been in line for that game, but the 22-year-old has been laboring of late. In Sunday’s loss to the Nationals, the right-handergave up five runs (four earned) in three innings. He walked five and gave up his 28th home run in 28 starts.
VandenHurk, meanwhile, last started on Sept. 8 at the Mets. His game was cut short due to tightness in his back, but he’s been throwing regularly and has felt fine.
VandenHurk is 2-2 with a 4.65 ERA in eight starts. In 40 2/3 innings, he’s struck out 39.
The plan for Volstad, and it could change depending on how the week goes, is to let him face batters in live batting practice on Saturday.
Volstad is striving to regain command of his sinker. The organization wants him to do so against hitters in a non-game situation.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez noted that could change based on availability of the pitching staff during the road trip, which began on Monday at St. Louis.
The Marlins will face the Reds in a four-game set beginning on Thursday.
