Waiting on VandenHurk
For now, the Marlins are going to give Rick VandenHurk every opportunity to make his next scheduled start, which would be Sunday against the Nationals at Land Shark Stadium.
Whether the 24-year-old right-hander is physically ready is expected to be determined on Thursday.
VandenHurk experienced back tightness during his start against the Mets on Tuesday at Citi Field. His outing was cut short after four innings when he felt his back tighten in the third inning.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez said on Wednesday: “We’re going to give him an opportunity.”
VandenHurk is scheduled to throw his between starts bullpen session on Thursday. If there is any sign that the back is bothering him, then he likely will be scratched.
“We will always err on the side of caution,” Gonzalez said.
Gonzalez didn’t say who will start if VandenHurk is replaced in the rotation, but the likely choice appears to be Chris Volstad.
