Ayala becomes free agent
On Aug. 29, Luis Ayala gave up three runs on four hits in one-third of an inning against the Padres. After the game, the Marlins designated the right-handed reliever for assignment.
On Saturday, Ayala was outrighted and he opted for free agency.
Ayala now can try to work out a deal with any club, although he wouldn’t qualify to be on a postseason roster since it is past the deadline to have playoff rosters set by Sept. 1.
Ayala appeared in 10 games for the Marlins, and he threw 7 2/3 innings. He struggled, posting an 0-3 record with an 11.74 ERA. He opened the season with the Twins, appearing in 28 games while tossing 32 1/3 innings. With Minnesota, he was 1-2 with a 4.18 ERA.
