Monday starter uncertain

Scratch Burke Badenhop off the list of potential starting pitchers for Monday night at San Diego.

After tossing two innings, and being tagged with the loss, on Friday night against the Phillies, Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez ruled out using Badenhop in the series opener with the Padres at PETCO Park.

“We probably wouldn’t use Badenhop,” Gonzalez said.

The next option could be Rick VandenHurk, who is at Triple-A New Orleans. A decision is expected on Sunday.

VandenHurk has big league experience, but he has yet to pitch for Florida this season. He opened the year on the disabled list with right elbow inflammation. He pitched in the World Baseball Classic for the Netherlands.

VandenHurk has enjoyed success at New Orleans, posting a 4-1 record with a 2.77 ERA in nine starts. The right-hander last pitched on Thursday, but his outing was cut short to three innings, which basically means it was a tuneup to be ready to go on Monday.

Any word on if this is just going to be a spot start or are we going to go with a full 5-man rotation even though we don’t need it right now?

sorry,no more for me today.turned off the tv.the marlins are done for 2009,starting with the 2 man rotation and cantu..it must be frustrating to watch other than jj and ricky pitch.and my fav cantu will not hit 14 hrs and have85 rbi’s this season, not with his out of whack stance..his flailing at the ball ist ab today 7-19 sun was pitiful. rather swing and k than look so bad ,especially with ducks on the pond…where is your hitting coach, writing in his little black book?right now you’llnever thne new complex ,not with a500 team

VandenHurk looked great in the WBC.
He has seemed to keep that roll going in New Orleans, and with almost “must win” games at the beginning of road trips this time of the year he might be a positive move going into a west coast stroll by the Marlins.

They needed to do somthing to shake up the starting pitching. They called up VandenHurk to replace Sean West. Now all they need to do something with Bonifacio to stimulate the offense….he has been nothing but a disappointment this year.
