Marlins Thursday roster moves

The Marlins on Thursday afternoon made it official that right-handed reliever Tim Wood has been recalled from Triple-A New Orleans.

Wood, a 44th round pick in 2002, is being called up to the big leagues for the first time. He appeared in 14 games and compiled 16 1/3 innings for New Orleans, posting an 0.54 ERA.

The Marlins also officially designated right-hander Hayden Penn for assignment.

With Penn, the Marlins have 10 days to either trade him, release him or place him through waivers in the first seven of the 10 days. If he ends up clearing waivers, the Marlins then could assign him to one of their Minor League clubs, which most likely would be New Orleans.

Additionally, the team outrighted right-handed reliever Carlos Martinez to New Orleans. And pitcher Rick VandenHurk was recalled from his rehab assignment, and he was reinstated from the 60-day disabled list and then optioned to New Orleans.
