Carroll making contributions

It’s 92 career at-bats and counting for Brett Carroll, who continues to look for his first MLB home run.

Carroll already has two career doubles and one triple, but he has yet to circle the bases. Now, he came close last Saturday at New York, crushing a pinch-hit double high off the wall in left field against the Mets at Citi Field.

When the ball came off his bat, he thought it was gone. So did his teammates, who were at the top step of the dugout. But on the 16-foot high part of the wall, the ball hit just beneath the home run mark.

Carroll took some good-natured ribbing for that.

“Now, they’re saying I need to work out more,” Carroll joked. “I knew I got a little bit under it, but I thought I had enough to get it out. The wind was blowing in too, so I had some things working against me.”

In fairness, Carroll hasn’t had a great deal of playing time. He’s appeared in 29 games this season, and he’s had 26 at-bats. He’s mainly a defensive specialist, and he possesses one of the strongest arms of any outfielder in baseball.

Carroll made his second big league start on Tuesday night, and he had two singles in Florida’s 10-3 win over the Brewers at Land Shark Stadium.

From his right field position, he made a terrific catch in the seventh inning, running down Jason Kendall’s foul ball down the right field-line. On the play, Carroll tumbled over the short wall and into the Marlins bullpen.

At the plate, Carroll said he’s taking a “simple approach.”

“I’m not trying to do too much,” he said. “Even pinch-hitting, and me being kind of young for this role, you don’t want to do too much.”
