De Aza called up
For the first time since 2007, Alejandro De Aza is back in the big leagues.
On Sunday morning, the Marlins selected De Aza’s contract from Triple-A New Orleans. To make room for him on the roster, reliever Carlos Martinez was optioned to New Orleans.
To fill a spot on the 40-man roster for De Aza, right-hander Rick VandenHurk was transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
The need for an extra bench player surfaced on Saturday night when Alfredo Amezaga tweaked his left knee while rounding third base in the eighth inning in Florida’s 6-3 win.
The Marlins are hopeful Amezaga will just need a few days to get better. Amezaga said on Sunday morning that he may be available to bunt in the series finale with the Dodgers. But manager Fredi Gonzalez said he wouldn’t play Amezaga unless it is an extreme emergency.
De Aza has dealt with ankle injuries in 2006 and 2007, and he didn’t play in the big leagues last year.
