Amezaga tweaks knee

Alfredo Amezaga felt a little pinch in his left knee while scoring an insurance run in the eighth inning on Saturday night, and for precautionary reasons, he was removed in the top of the ninth.

The discomfort is to the same knee Amezaga sprained while playing for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic in March. However, Amezaga said the pinch this time was to the inner part of the knee, which is a different area than his injury in Spring Training.

“He just tweaked it coming around third, and we’re going to wait and see tomorrow,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “Hopefully, it’s nothing serious or major. We’ll see. We didn’t want to take a chance.”

Amezaga had the knee packed in ice after the Marlins held on for a 6-3 win over the Dodgers. But he regularly ices the same knee since he aggravated it at the Classic.

Amezaga said he doesn’t think the discomfort is serious, and he is hopeful to be available on Sunday.

In the eighth inning, Amezaga reached on a fielder’s choice, RBI ground ball. He stole second, and scored on Emilio Bonifacio’s single.

While rounding third, he felt the pinch in his knee.

The field was wet because it started to rain heavily late in the game, and then the rain stopped.

“I don’t remember what leg it was that I stepped on third, but when I was coming around third, that’s when I felt it,” Amezaga said. “That’s when I kind of slipped and felt it.”

Bonifacio replaced Amezaga in center field, and Wes Helms took over at third base in the ninth inning.
