Sanchez on DL
As expected, the Marlins placed Anibal Sanchez on the 15-day disabled list.
The roster move came a day after the 25-year-old sustained a right shoulder sprain. Replacing Sanchez on the roster is infielder Chris Coghlan, who had his contract selected from Triple-A New Orleans.
The news on Sanchez was better than most feared. Sanchez has just a sprain, and he won’t throw for three or four weeks. The hope is he is back in two months.
Sanchez experienced pain in his throwing shoulder during the fifth inning on Thursday in the Marlins’ 4-2 loss to the Braves at Dolphin Stadium.
Sanchez threw a slider to Jeff Francoeur with one out in the fifth, and immediately he felt something was wrong. He exited after 71 pitches, and the Marlins have yet to announce who will replace him in the rotation.
His next turn would have been Tuesday in Milwaukee. Candidates to take over his spot are Hayden Penn and Burke Badenhop, both are on the roster pitching long relief. If the team opts to call up a Minor Leaguer, right-hander Daniel Barone of Triple-A New Orleans is a possibility.
On Thursday, Sanchez was examined by team physician, Dr. Lee Kaplan. There is concern because in June of 2007, Sanchez underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum.
