Coghlan getting called up
Some offensive help is on the way to Denver.
The Marlins are promoting Chris Coghlan from Triple-A New Orleans.
Hitting .344 for the Zephyrs, Coghlan was informed after Thursday’s game that he was headed to the big leagues. “It’s everything I’ve worked for since I was a little kid,” Coghlan told the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
Normally, the Marlins promote a prospect to the big leagues with the expectation that he will play. So expect the 23-year-old to get an opportunity either at second base, third base or left field.
He’s always played the infield, but on Thursday night he saw action in left field.
Coghlan is expected to take the roster spot of Anibal Sanchez, who will go on the disabled list with a right-shoulder injury.
The Marlins open a three-game series with the Rockies on Friday.
Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla and center fielder Cameron Maybin are struggling. One option is to move Jeremy Hermida back to right field, and use Cody Ross and/or Alfredo Amezaga in center.
