Coghlan coming through

Chris Coghlan is posting numbers that are too good to ignore.

A sandwich first-round pick in 2006, Coghlan has raised his batting average to .344 at Triple-A New Orleans. Through 25 games and 96 at-bats, he has three homers, 22 RBIs, nine doubles and a triple.

A left-handed hitter, he has walked 12 times and struck out 10. Plus he’s stolen nine bases to go along with a .418 on-base and .552 slugging percentage.

For most of his Minor League career, he has played either second base or third base. What’s interesting is on Thursday night, he was in left field.

To purely speculate, if the Marlins are thinking of making a move, and promote Coghlan as a left fielder, that could mean a couple of things. It may mean the organization is looking to give Cameron Maybin some more seasoning in the Minor Leagues.

In that scenario, Cody Ross could move to center field, with Alfredo Amezaga as a platoon option. And Jeremy Hermida could move from left field to right field.

Again, this is just speculation, but some things to consider.

Coghlan isn’t known for power, but he’s a talented hitter, and he could hit either first or second in the order. He’s been batting third for the Zephyrs.
