Bonifacio's first HR
Emilio Bonifacio entered Opening Day with 192 career MLB at-bats without a home run.
In his third at-bat as a Marlin on Monday, he put an end to the drought. But the first time he circled the bases as a big leaguer didn’t come in conventional style.
In the fourth inning off Julian Tavarez, Bonifacio lifted a fly to deep center field. Lastings Milledge, who was playing shallow with Cameron Maybin on third, couldn’t run down the ball that dropped well before the warning track.
Bonifacio kicked into another gear and raced around the bases for an inside-the-park, two-run homer. It came on his 195th MBL at-bat.
It was the 14th inside-the-park homer in Marlins history, and 11th at spacious Dolphin Stadium.
Bonifacio, a switch-hitter, had 12 home runs in the Minor Leagues, with one coming last year. On Sunday, he said his last home run was in the Dominican Republic Winter League.
The last Marlin to hit an inside-the-park HR was Hanley Ramirez on Sept. 26, 2007 vs. the Reds.
