Sanchez named fourth starter

Anibal Sanchez will be the fourth starter.

Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez put to rest speculation over who the fourth and fifth starters will be. Sanchez gets the nod to pitch on April 10 against the Mets, Florida’s fourth game.

Left-hander Andrew Miller, meanwhile, will be the No. 5 starter. Miller will remain with the team on Opening Day, and not be sent to the Minor Leagues for a start. His first start will be on April 15.

Because of early season off days, Florida won’t need a fifth starter until April 18. To give all five starters an extra day of rest, the team is placing Miller in on April 15, when the Marlins are at Atlanta.

Miller will pitch in long relief and be available in that capacity until April 11.

A reason Sanchez is going immediately in the rotation is because he is still building back after 2007 right shoulder surgery. And he’s had just one relief appearance in his MLB career, and that came when he was a rookie in 2006.

Miller made nine relief appearances and 20 starts for Florida last year.

Now the Marlins rotation is Ricky Nolasco, Josh Johnson, Chris Volstad, Sanchez and Miller.
